"Everyday the ducks a the chickens line up for their treats. As soon as they hear the sliding door open they rush over as fast as their little legs will waddle"
"When I first got my Grub Terra I fed my chickens (7) about a cup a day for 3 days. Then only once a week after that. They love them and after feeding them the Grub Terra black fly larva they started producing more and bigger eggs. I also noticed they're feathers looking shinier and healthier."
"The chickens love it. After a week there is a difference in the shells, getting harder. The yolk has gone back to happy orange! Highly recommend."
"My girls love Grub Terra! I've given it to them when they are molting to help produce feathers. The girls will chase me down when they see the bag."
"My chickens love this product. Living in Michigan, we go months without getting eggs from our girls. Adding these to our feed has helped them start laying again! Highly recommend!!"
"My chickens are very picky when it comes to their "treats!" So I was pleasantly surprised when they ALL devoured the Grub Terra treats! My rooster even loved them so much he dove into the bag…"

Treats should stay under about 10% of what a hen eats, so give up to about 2 tablespoons (10 g) per hen a day, on top of a complete layer feed. Toss them around the run or sprinkle them over the feed. The calculator below works out how long a bag lasts for your flock.

The Problem
Most keepers fight these one at a time. They usually come back to the same gap: not enough real protein and calcium, the kind hens are built to forage for.

Bare patches and feathers everywhere. Feathers are about 90% protein, and she stops laying while she regrows them.

One egg where there used to be five. Molt, short days and stress all slow the nest box down.

Pellets cover the basics. Hens are built to eat bugs too, and a bare run or a bowl of scratch doesn't give them that.

Shells that crack in your hand. Every shell is built from calcium, and scratch grains and most treats have very little.
What's really in the bag?
Not all larvae are clean, and most bags never tell you what's been tested. Every batch of ours is lab-tested for heavy metals, including lead and arsenic, and comes back safe.
The Solution
Chickens are foragers. In the wild they spend their day hunting for bugs. Our dried black soldier fly larvae bring that back to your backyard: protein, fat and calcium in one handful, with nothing added.
Feathers are built from protein. A daily handful helps her regrow through molt and get back to laying.
2–5% calcium on our label. Calcium is the mineral behind every shell, and scratch grains have very little.
Every batch is tested safe for heavy metals. 100% larvae, no additives, no preservatives.
Our larvae grow on pre-consumer food waste that would otherwise go to landfills. Good for your flock and the planet.

36% crude protein. Feathers are mostly keratin, a protein, and every egg white is protein too. Regrowing a full coat after molt takes a lot of it.
Guaranteed analysis: crude protein 36% · crude fat 35% · crude fiber 10% · calcium 2–5% · lysine 1.1% · phosphorus 0.75%.
Recently purchased Grubterra after hearing it would increase egg production in my chickens during the winter months. I was skeptical but I went from 1 egg a day to 3 or 4!
What the research on black soldier fly larvae actually found.
Feathers are about 90% keratin, a protein. In a study of older laying hens, the ones given soldier fly larvae every day had less feather damage after 11 weeks than hens without.
The research: Star et al., Animals, 2020 (feather score 2.2 vs 2.9 at 78 weeks). Jóźwik-Pruska et al., Polymers, 2025 (feather keratin).
Not all larvae are clean. Every batch of ours is lab-tested for heavy metals, including lead and arsenic, before it ships, and comes back safe. They're never grown in China, so you know exactly what your hens are eating.
Hens fed soldier fly larvae meal laid yolks that were noticeably redder, with more lutein, than hens on a standard diet. Our keepers say the same: "The yolk has gone back to happy orange!" – Janet B.
The research: Secci et al., Animal, 2018 (yolk red index 5.63 vs 1.36; lutein 8.6 vs 4.9 mg/kg).
In a study where larvae made up to 20% of laying hens' daily portion, egg production, egg weight and shell strength held steady. Keep treats to about 10% of what she eats and you're well inside that.
The research: Tahamtani et al., Poultry Science, 2021. Star et al., Animals, 2020 ("egg laying parameters were similar").

Dried whole. That's the entire ingredient list.

Shake the bag. Most keepers say their hens know the sound.

Toss them around the run or over the feed, once a day.

Keep it daily, especially through molt and winter.
What To Expect
The most common thing keepers tell us: shake the bag and the whole flock shows up.
Hens learn the sound and wait for you at the gate.
Keepers tell us about more eggs, better shells and richer orange yolks.
Extra protein when she needs it most, so she regrows and gets back to laying.
Energy and protein for short, cold days, when the nest box usually goes quiet.
Based on what keepers tell us in their reviews. Every flock is different.
